I want to tell you about my mom, Margie, who is 89 years young. She lives in New Jersey, six miles away from the Atlantic Ocean at the “Jersey Shore”. The news of hurricane Irene coming was concerning to my brothers who also live in New Jersey and the fact that our mother would be alone during the storm in her apartment was unacceptable to all four of her adult children. She lives on the seventh floor which is the top floor of a senior community apartment building and she normally experiences strong winds at that location so it was very concerning now that a hurricane was headed her way. My brother, Donald, called our mom and said he was bringing a large suit case and was going to take her to our brother, David’s house which was built to withstand over 100 + mile per hour winds and was inland. Donald instructed our mom to over pack. Before Margie got one article of clothing packed or collected her toiletries she went for her Papervana binder with all her life’s papers and plans and had it ready to go; only then did she pack up clothing and some additional items she wanted to bring with her. Margie knows what is important and she demonstrated her high level of preparedness when she knew to get her Papervana binder first and it was up to date and ready when she was!
Besides two caring sons, our mother raised two daughters who have followed in her very organized footsteps and now we can help others to be prepared and protected. What a wonderful legacy of love to pass along!
