Year after year we make all sorts of New Year’s resolutions, some we stick to, however, most are quickly discarded and we return to business as usual.  There is one resolution we all need to make and definitely stick to, but tend to avoid because we hate the idea and don’t feel like adding another overwhelming task to our lives.  I am referring to finally, once and for all “getting your ducks in a row” and having a system in place that will keep them that way!  It is time to set up a simple system to organize and manage all your vital records and documents, get your emergency and life plans in place and learn life’s best practices so you will no longer feel overwhelmed or in a state of chaos.  Papervana makes it easy to stick to this resolution.
If you are not a do-it-yourselfer, this must sound miserable to you?  If it does, it can be done for you.  Here are several options to get your ducks in a row.

  • You are welcome to do this yourself following the Papervana online tutorial
  • You can sign up for a small group workshop for guidance and accountability
  • You can request a small group workshop be held at your home or place of employment
  • You can have one-on-one coaching in person or over the phone/Skype
  • You can sign up for a webinar in the privacy of your own home or office
  • You can do any of the above and also sign up for system maintenance

There is actually a National Face Your Fears Day in the month of October.  When it comes to issues of getting our own house in order do we really care?  We think about the things we should do and the critical parts of our lives we should take care of, but why do we procrastinate or totally avoid issues that could actually make our lives better.  What are we really afraid of?

Do you have a child emergency medical release form prepared and signed for your child or grandchild to be given to sitters or daycare?  We should be afraid if a child has to be taken to an emergency room and can’t get the necessary treatment.

Why do approximately 80% of Americans not have a will?  Are we afraid to tempt fate that we will die prematurely if we have one prepared?  How silly!  We should be much more afraid of the probate issues and the burden on our family.

Are we afraid to review our insurances policies with our insurance agent because we think it will cost us more money if the premium has to be increased due to changes in our lives.  We should be much more afraid of needing to file a claim only to find out that we do not have the correct coverage.

Do we feel embarrassed or humiliated to make an appointment with a financial planner or estate attorney because we don’t have all our vital records and documents in order?  We should be much more afraid of the turmoil in our life and the life of our heirs due to our lack of planning.

We care about the people we love, don’t we?  If we truly care, we must take the first step toward putting a plan in place to ensure we leave behind a legacy of love.  Don’t let the last thoughts your loved ones have about you be negative.  Face your fears and  remember even the most difficult things can be done just one step at a time.

I want to tell you about my mom, Margie, who is 89 years young.  She lives in New Jersey, six miles away from the Atlantic Ocean at the “Jersey Shore”.  The news of hurricane Irene coming was concerning to my brothers who also live in New Jersey and the fact that our mother would be alone during the storm in her apartment was unacceptable to all four of her adult children.  She lives on the seventh floor which is the top floor of a senior community apartment building and she normally experiences strong winds at that location so it was very concerning now that a hurricane was headed her way.  My brother, Donald, called our mom and said he was bringing a large suit case and was going to take her to our brother, David’s house which was built to withstand over 100 + mile per hour winds and was inland.  Donald instructed our mom to over pack.  Before Margie got one article of clothing packed or collected her toiletries she went for her Papervana binder with all her life’s papers and plans and had it ready to go; only then did she pack up clothing and some additional items she wanted to bring with her.  Margie knows what is important and she demonstrated her high level of preparedness when she knew to get her Papervana binder first and it was up to date and ready when she was!

Besides two caring sons, our mother raised two daughters who have followed in her very organized footsteps and now we can help others to be prepared and protected.  What a wonderful legacy of love to pass along!

We are a society filled with individuals who like to accumulate “stuff”.  Yet we are not very good at managing all of our belongings since inventory control is not a skill most of us have.  Knowing what you own and being able to prove it can be vitally important during critical times in life such as moving, emergencies, disasters or for estate purposes.

Preparing a home inventory is critical for insurance coverage and claims, tax donations and estate planning, but it is also useful for moving, furniture layouts, home redecorating or renovations. Combine home inventory with your current warranties and manuals. Continue reading »

Take a few minutes to mentally walk through every room of your home and think about what it looks like and what you want it to look like. The rooms in our homes have drastically changed over the last few decades. We have (or wish we had) bedrooms like retreats, bathrooms like spas, expensive kitchens that are rarely cooked in, open space living rooms with large flat screen TVs and home offices with all the latest technology.  Many times, clutter invades some or all of these spaces.
